Our Finished Kitchen Remodel
Our Kitchen Remodeling Project: From Demolition to Dream Kitchen
After downsizing and moving into our forever home, one of our very first major home improvement projects was a complete kitchen remodel. We knew we wanted to create a beautiful, functional kitchen that fit our lifestyle while also making the most of the available space.
The kitchen renovation began with a complete demolition. Everything was removed — including the sheetrock — so we could start with a clean slate. We extended one of the walls to create additional space for custom kitchen cabinets and storage. We also added new plumbing for a future pot filler over the stove, along with new electrical wiring for our relocated oven and future under-cabinet lighting.
It was amazing to discover just how many details and decisions go into designing a new kitchen!
One of our biggest design decisions was choosing kitchen cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling. However, our cabinetmaker needed to carefully allow space for our planned coffered ceiling, making coordination between the cabinetry and ceiling design especially important.
From there, the list of decisions continued. We selected our kitchen cabinet hardware, paint and stain colors, cabinet door and drawer styles, vent hood design, sink, appliances, plumbing fixtures, and lighting. Every element played a role in creating the overall look and feel we wanted for our new kitchen.
Once the new coffered ceiling was installed, we turned our attention to the kitchen lighting. We carefully determined the best locations for our new ceiling lights and added dimmer switches to most of the lighting so we could easily change the atmosphere and brightness of the room.
One of our final major kitchen design decisions was choosing the countertop material and color. With so many options available, finding the right combination of durability, functionality, color, and style was another important part of completing our kitchen renovation.
Looking back, our kitchen remodel involved far more planning and decisions than we initially imagined. From demolition, electrical and plumbing work to custom cabinetry, ceiling details, lighting, countertops, and finishing touches, every step helped transform our kitchen into a space that truly feels like part of our forever home.
